October is Fall Car Care Month!  This is a great reminder to make sure your vehicle is ready for the harsh winter weather ahead.  Taking a few simple steps now to prepare can save you many headaches in the future.  The Car Care Council recommends five important steps to prepare your car for winter driving:
  1. Battery- Be sure to keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free.  Cold weather is tough on batteries, so it is important to check the battery and charging system.  Batteries typically do not give warning signs before they fail, so batteries should be replaced every 3 years.
  2. Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades - Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) must work properly to ensure interior comfort as well as for safety reasons, like defrosting windows. Generally wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
  3. Tires - Check the tires, including the tire pressure and tread depth.  During the winter month tire traction may be the most important safety precaution.  If snow and ice are a problem in  your are, consider purchasing special tires designed to grip slick roads.
  4. Brakes - Have your break system checked by a professional.  That includes brake linings, rotors and drums.  Brakes are critical in car safety when driving on ice or snow covered roads.
