Drive Safely on Halloween

Thursday is Halloween, one of spookiest nights of the year, but also a night where the streets are heavily populated.  Children are dressed up and excited, running house to house to get their candy.  Which is why it is very important to drive extra safely on this particular day.  This extra excitement will cause children as well as adults to move in unpredictable ways, like running across the street or even jumping out from behind things to give someone a scare.  This is why you must be alert while driving and follow these safety tips.
  • SLOW DOWN and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
  • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, curbs and before leaving a stop sign.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  • Eliminate any distractions inside your car, including your phone, so you can focus on the road.
  • Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day.
  • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 pm so be especially alert during those hours.

Prepare your Vehicle for the Winter

October is Fall Car Care Month!  As the month comes to an end it is really time to make sure that your car is ready for the colder weather.  Taking a few simple steps now can save you the headache and the cost of an emergency breakdown later.  You can bring your car down to Wantagh Mitsubishi and we will take care of everything for you.  If you decide to take care of it yourself the Car Care Council recommends five proactive steps to make sure your car is ready for winter driving.

  1. Battery - You should keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free.  The cold weather is harsh on batteries, so it's wise to check the battery and charging system.  A battery should be replaced every three years.
  2. Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades - Check that the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system are working properly as it is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting.  Wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don't properly clean your windshield should be replaced.
  3. Tires - Check the tires, including the pressure and tread depth, which are essential for traction when it snows.  Uneven wear on your tires indicates a need for wheel alignment.  If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed for gripping slick roads.
  4. Brakes - Have your brake system checked, including brake linings, rotors and drums.  Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and are even more important when driving on slippery roads.
Taking preemptive action to get your vehicle ready for the winter is very important, for more information and full checklist please visit http://goo.gl/4zgsqH.

Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mitsubishi Mirage has not yet started sales in the United States.  This is not a fashion focused car, but focuses more on its sensible transport for those who want great gas mileage.  Mitsubishi's last subcompact car was called the Colt, was never sold in the US.  The Mirage made its U.S. debut at the 2013 New York Auto show and will reach showrooms this fall, but it recently went on sale in Europe.
In Europe, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is offered with a choice of two three-cylinder, 12-valve engines, a 1.0- or a 1.2 liter, but only the latter will be offered in the U.S.  It produces 74 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 74 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm and will be available with either a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.  But Mitsubishi expects the Mirage's running costs to be among the lowest on the road.  It will be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline vehicle available in the U.S. It is expected to get around 37 mpg city and about 44 mpg highway.  For more information on the Mirage and its review please visit http://goo.gl/rHSIFc

This is a great opportunity to see so many cars in a single location.  Have you ever wanted to sit in a corvette, even though it is out of you price range?  Almost every car is unlocked and the show embodies a very laid back environment that encourages people to interact with the cars.  Like many auto shows, there are no sales permitted on the floor, so there is no pressure to buy when checking out a few hot-rods.  Dealers are eager to show off their new inventory and are willing to answer any questions you have about any particular car.  It allows prospective car buyers a chance to view cars from every automaker under one roof.  For those who are looking to actually drive, Ford and Scion are each bringing vehicles to test drive.  For more info on the Auto Show visit http://goo.gl/riUO4G.

Fall Car Care

October is Fall Car Care Month!  This is a great reminder to make sure your vehicle is ready for the harsh winter weather ahead.  Taking a few simple steps now to prepare can save you many headaches in the future.  The Car Care Council recommends five important steps to prepare your car for winter driving:
  1. Battery- Be sure to keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free.  Cold weather is tough on batteries, so it is important to check the battery and charging system.  Batteries typically do not give warning signs before they fail, so batteries should be replaced every 3 years.
  2. Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades - Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) must work properly to ensure interior comfort as well as for safety reasons, like defrosting windows. Generally wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
  3. Tires - Check the tires, including the tire pressure and tread depth.  During the winter month tire traction may be the most important safety precaution.  If snow and ice are a problem in  your are, consider purchasing special tires designed to grip slick roads.
  4. Brakes - Have your break system checked by a professional.  That includes brake linings, rotors and drums.  Brakes are critical in car safety when driving on ice or snow covered roads.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV by 2014?

It looks like the US is going to have to wait a little longer to see sales of the Mitsubishi PHEV plug-in hybrid.  Mitsubishi is experiencing a production stoppage caused by battery issues along with a very high demand from Japan and Europe.

It seems as though a year from now would be the earliest that we could see sales of the plug-in hybrid SUV on our shores.  Production of the SUV did however launch in its home country earlier this year.  The new Outlander PHEV can travel about 34 miles on battery power alone and also achieves roughly 143 MPGe, according to number issued when the car was unveiled in Paris in 2012.  The power train also features two electric motors that separately power the two axles and a gasoline engine that can either be used as a generator for the motors or to power the wheels directly.  To read more about the Outlander PHEV please visit http://goo.gl/4f1uTk.
